AT THE TURNING OF THE YEAR

At the turning of the year

when I’m learning not to fear

I still keep my jumper on

can’t believe it’s getting warm

For any day the wind may blow

and any day the rain may fall

so hold me close when you are near

at the turning of the year

My dull shoots are stirred with hope

he said it’s cruel I say dope

I’ll stake my dime on your winning smile

and not look back ‘fore the turn of a mile

Every now and then I fall down flat

and as I’m lying on my back

I shake my fists at the stars above

but then I see they filled my cup

I cut myself trying to sing and shave

well I’m still learning to behave

put on a suit do as I’m told

help the king pile up his gold

But I’m not alone with this burning need

to bite the hand that thinks it feeds

Still any day the wind may blow

and any day the rain may fall

so hold me close when you are near

at the turning of the year

Yes any day the wind may blow

and any day the rain may fall

so hold me close while I am here

at the turning of the year
