THE BALLAD OF THE INTERNAL COLONISATION

Well they kicked us out of the orphanages
and they kicked us all out of the mental homes
then they kicked us out of the libraries
and they kicked us all out of the hospitals
and so we walk the streets
and frighten little children

Then they ripped out all the beautiful wood
and they ripped off all the desks and chairs
ripped out the books some of which we took
but they kept the cornices and they kept the stairs
and so we walk the streets
and frighten little children

Then they broke it all down into little rooms
and lined them all out with plasterboard
and all the bathrooms shine with Italian tiles
and the living rooms decked with oak-faced floor
while we walk the streets
and frighten little children

Then they moved right in to the orphanages
and they moved right in to the mental homes
and they moved right on to the libraries
and they moved into the hospital
while we walk the streets
and frighten little children

And we watch them come
and we watch them go
they’re a breed apart that much is sure
they come in all colours tho mostly white
their hands are soft but their fists
clench
tight

while we walk the streets
and frighten little children
